Favorite Places: Acadia National Park- 34,370 acres. 1919, The oldest National Park east of the Mississippi River. Portions of Mt. Desert, Scoodic peninsula, Isle au Haut. 40 miles of carriage roads, roadside lookouts, scenic drives, hiking, campgrounds, picnic areas. Second most visited National Park. Pemetic Mountain- Mt. Great Head- Bar Harbor- High coastland headlands.Ruined lookout tower, views from trail. The Beehive- Bar Harbor- E cliff shapes. trails, first parcel of Acadia National Park. The Ovens- Bar Harbor- Marine arches. Thunder Hole- Bar Harbor- Tidal cavern carved by wave action. 3 hours before high tide waves create the famous booming "thunder". Water spurts out as high as 40'. Wild Gardens of Acadia- Bar Harbor- 200 species of plants, trees and shrubs native to Acadia National Park. Ship Harbor Nature Trail- Southwest Harbor- Self guiding loop trail along shore. Beech Mountain- Southwest Harbor- 400' elev gain, Trails, fire tower, exquisite views, 1 1/4 mile. Flying Mountain- Southwest Harbor- 200' elev gain, Veiws of Somes Sound, Cadillac Mt., 1/2 mile. Baker Island "Dance Floor"- Cranberry Isles- Piles of slabs of granite, powerful waves. Baker Island Light- Cranberry Isles- 1828 rebuilt 1855. Located at the entrance to Frenchman's Bay. Bear Island Light- Cranberry Isles- 1839 rebuilt 1889. South East entrance of Southwest Harbor. Bass Harbor Head Light- Tremont- 1858. Marks the entrance to Bass Harbor. Great Duck Island Light- Frenchboro- 1890, Well know landmark. NW side of Mt. Desert Island. Mount Champlain- Isle au Haut- 400' elev gain, Trails along ridge from summit. 1 mile. Isle au Haut Light- Isle au Haut- 1907, Tower is gray granite on bottom and white brick on top. There is a bridge that connects the light to the shore. Mount Desert Rock Light- Called "God's Rock Garden". 26 miles from the mainland. |
