Information- Millinocket Headquarters and Visitor's Center at Togue Pond. Mount Katahdin- Mt Katahdin Twp- 4,200' elev gain, Maine's tallest peak, "Mile high" Mt Katahdin. Appalachian Trail starts at the top of Mt Katahdin. 2 3/4 mile hike to peak. Baxter Peak- Mt Katahdin Twp- The first place in the USA the morning sun touches, and the highest point in Maine. The Chimney- Mt Katahdin Twp- The north face of the peak has a nearly enclosed hollow area. Blocked internally by 4 large wedged stones. Great Basin- Mt Katahdin Twp- Glacial valley (horseshoe shaped) with steep walls of pink granite. Views and trails. The Knife Edge- Mt Katahdin Twp- A steep ridge between 2 basins. Formed by pressure between 2 glaciers. 1 mile. Northwest Basin- Baxter State Park- Mt Katahdin Twp- Unusual glacial rock knolls called "roches moutonees" or "sheepbacks". The Table Land- Baxter State Park- Mt Katahdin Twp- Glacial boulder field. 4,700' above sea level. Katahdin Stream Falls- Baxter State Park- Katahdin Twp- T3 R10 Wels Twp- 4 drops with a total of 27 yards. Trails. Mount O-J-I- Baxter State Park- T3 R10 Wels Twp- 3 slides at one time spelled O-J-I (which the mountain was named).
