Historic District- Rockland- Examples of Italianate Mansard, Greek Revival and Colonial Revival architecture. Recorded in the National Register of Historic Places. Old German Meeting House- Waldoboro- 1772, Square benched pews and a wine glass shaped pulpit. |
Favorite Places: Birch Point Beach (Lucia Beach)- Rockland- 220 yards, Pocket beach, rocky headlands and fresh water marsh. Rockland Breakwater Light- Rockland- 1888 rebuilt in 1902. Built on granite pier. Matinicus Rock- Criehaven TWP, near Rockland- 60' above sea level granite mass. Home of puffin colonies. Other birds nest here such as raxorbill auk. Two Bush Island Light- Two Bush Island- 1817, Located at the entrance of Two Bush Channel. Crescent Beach- Owls Head- 1,100 yards, Swimming beach near summer colony. Owls Head Light- Owls Head- 1826, Tower of white granite is built on the peak of the headland. 87' above the ground.. Areys Neck Woods- Vinalhaven- Trails near cove and marsh. Armbrust Hill Wildlife Reservation- Vinalhaven- Old granite quarry. Pond, birches and quarry garden. Trails & picnic area. Lanes Island Preserve- Vinalhaven- 43 arces, Located on the rocky coast with blueberry, rose, bayberry and spruce. Meadow Mountain Preserve- Warren- 259 acres, Portion of a wooded mountain and frontage on Quiggle Brook. Osborn Finch Preserve- Waldoboro- 11 acres, Trails to old field and shoreline on Medomak River. Camden Hills State Park- Camden- Hiking trails. Toll road to summit of Mt Battie. Campsites, picnic tables, toilets, hot showers, dumping station & parking. Cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Mount Battie- Camden- 600' elev gain, Views of Camden village and harbor. Nature trail to exposed summit. 1 mile. Mount Megunticook- Camden- 1100 elev gain, Megunticook Trail passes by caves and stream. Views from to exposed ledges. Map & guide at park entrance. Base to Lookout 1 mile. Ragged Mountain- Camden- 1000' elev gain, Trail follows ski lift to ledges at the summit. Views of West Branch Trail. Snow Bowl to summit. 1mile. Maiden Cliff- Camden- 800' cliffs. Views of Megunticook Lake. Accessible by Camden Hills park trail. Mullins Head Park- North Haven- Town park near the shore. Damariscotta Lake State Park- Jefferson- Park on lake, swimming, fishing, picnic tables, grills and parking. Warren Island State Park- Islesboro- Accessible by boat only. Hiking, swimming, fishing, camping, mooring & boat launching. Marshall Point Light- St George- 1823 rebuilt 1858, White tower is 30' above high water. Whitehead Light- St George- 1807 rebuilt 1852, Thomas Jefferson gave the orders to build the lighthouse. Gray tower and attached to a red brick building. Fort St Georges- St George- 1809, State owned fort. Accessible by boat. Martinicus Rock Light- Criehaven- 1848, Originally a wooden building & 2 wooden towers. Replaced with 2 granite towers. Light is automatic. Grindle Point Light- Islesboro- 1850 replaced in 1875. 54' from high water. Bald Rock Mountain- Lincolnville- 500' elev gain, Veiws of Mt Desert Island and Penobscot Bay islands. Road to summit. 1/2 mile. Head Tide- Alna- Holding pool above mill dam (abandoned). During spring run the water is filled with alewives. Sheepscot Reversing Falls- Alna- Tidal channel with 2 directional falls. Franklin Island Light- Friendship- 1805 rebuilt 1855, Accessible by boat. |
